Shooting Mare Island

Published: April, 2006

Fetterly Gallery of the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation presents Shooting the Island: Photographers View Mare Island. This exhibition features nearly 50 evocative and atmospheric color and black and white photographs from eight contemporary artists, all of whom have photographed Mare Island over the past three years.

These artists, each with their own unique, individual vision, capture the industrial and naval history of the Island, from its abandoned dry docks to the Tripoli aircraft carrier anchored in front of the Coal Shed.

Artist Pearl Jones Tranter states her photographs seek to view the ruins of the former work site of the past in a serene and enigmatic moment of transition in its history. Tom Paiva and Tim Baskerville are members of the Nocturnes, a photography group who specializes in night photography. Their photos of Mare Island at night are especially intriguing.

Shooting the Island: Photographers View Mare Island runs through April 29. Featured artists: Tim Baskerville, Michael Halberstadt, Pearl Jones Tranter, Miriam Nathan-Roberts, Michael Narciso, Tom Paiva, Matthew Neubauer, Timothy Rose.

Tom Paiva, who shot the above photo, is a nature photographer whose corpus has an emphasis on waterfront themes. He was the official photographer for the rebuild of the Ferry Building. Bay Crossings has previously featured his work (June ’05 BCM cover). See more of his sublime photography at: www.tompaiva.com
