Social Distancing Measures Provide Space, Peace of Mind for Ferry Riders

One of the best ways to stay healthy during the COVID-19 crisis is to keep a safe distance from others. To that end, San Francisco Bay Ferry (SFBF) has taken some measures to ensure every passenger has enough space on board.

  • Maximum capacity on each vessel has been reduced substantially
  • Unavailable seats have been taped off
  • Seat availability charts are posted every week

San Francisco Bay Ferries are currently operating at less than 50% capacity on all vessels. WETA, the agency that manages San Francisco Bay Ferry service, is working closely with regional transit and public health partners to determine sustainable capacity levels going forward.

The new seat availability charts incorporate ridership data to give a snapshot of how many seats are expected to be available on any given departure. This provides additional information and peace of mind to passengers concerned about being denied boarding due to capacity. So far, no departures since March have reached maximum capacity.
